WhenIwasinelementaryschool,myteachersalwayscomplainedab...

When I was in elementary school, my teachers always complained about my behavior in class. There was no doubt that I had a great deal of energy, and therefore I always talked with my classmates and sometimes I didn’t pay attention to the lessons, which always made my teachers angry. If you don’t believe me, the comments (評語) on my report cards every year can tell you the story.

In my third year of elementary school, my teacher wrote, “Neil should have a more serious attitude towards his schoolwork.” And in my fifth year, my teacher wrote, “Neil doesn’t work hard to complete his work and his compositions. He has to be encouraged and urged by his parents or teachers.” And after only a few months, my sixth-grade teacher wrote, “Less social involvement and more academic diligence (勤奮) is in order.”

Later that same school year, my sixth-grade teacher noticed that all my book reports were about the universe ( 宇宙). Knowing that I had a lot of extra energy, she suggested that I take advantage of after-school classes about the universe at the Hayden Planetarium.

From then on, my interest in the universe became stronger and stronger. Instead of killing my time in class, I focused my extra energy on the subject that might become my career in the future. Between the ages of eleven and seventeen, I took about eight courses on the universe. I received an attractive certificate ( *書) on successful completion of the course, signed by both the instructor and the head of the Hayden

Planetarium.

Now I am the director of the Hayden Planetarium and a research associate (合夥人) of the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History, both in New York City. We still offer these classes today and give out certificates of completion, which are signed by the instructor and me. Welcome to take extra

classes here.
