Mr．and Mrs．White have just opened a small restaurant．In order to make more people come here，they put a notice in front of the restaurant，and it said，“Meals on the House for Three Days．”

A foreign student came to the place．He didn’t know much English．On the second day he happened to pass by the restaurant．It Was lunchtime and he felt very hungry．“Well，here is a restaurant．I am going to have something to eat．”He walked to the restaurant when he saw the notice．“American people are really strange．They even eat dinners on the house! But how can I get up to the top of the house?” he said to himself．

The foreign student looked around and found a ladder near the restaurant．He was very glad. But as he reached the top，he heard someone shouting at him，“Hey! What are you doing there?” Mr．White Was looking at him angrily and beside him was a policeman．

“Doesn’t the notice say Meals on the House for Three Days? Is it just a joke?” the foreign student replied．

When they heard this，both Mr．White and the policeman laughed．“Do you know what ON

THE HOUSE means?”said Mr．White．“It means you can have a meal in this restaurant but you don’t need to Pay for it．”
