    Many years ago, on a winter morning, Lily, our only daughter, sat quietly, all her heart put into her work.    “He can’t read yet,” she said, “but he can look at the pictures.”

   “Thanks for always being there for me, Mum,” it read, “I’m glad that we are best friends,”
