      For people who are interested in space, nothing is more exciting than the idea of life on other planets(行星). At first, when Mars showed signs of having life, everyone was excited. The idea has produced many films and stories including The Martian (《火星救援》), which shows a man tried his best to live on Mars. But would it actually be possible to live there?

   Although the idea of living on Mars is great, the reality does not look as good. Mars does not have a friendly atmosphere (大氣) for humans. There is very little oxygen (氧氣) there, and because it is farther away from the sun than the earth, it is also very cold. The temperature on Mars can be -62℃on average. This is much too cold for humans.

   However, scientists say it might be possible to live there without an atmosphere. The daytime of Mars is similar to the earth’s, which means there’s enough sunlight to grow plants inside safe buildings. However, they would have to grow in soil(土壤) from the earth. Mars does not have a strong enough atmosphere to stop the radiation (輻*) from space, which makes it dangerous to grow things in the soil.

   Also, the radiation causes problems for our health. One way we could live with the radiation and cold temperatures would be to build homes under the ground or within the rocks on the planet. These would give humans the heat and protection the planet doesn’t have.

   Although it’s a long time before we would be able to live on Mars, NASA is hoping to make some progress within the next 20 years.
