The Proclamation of Indonesian Independence on August 17th, 1945 threw the country into four years of war with the Netherlands, which Indonesia won in 1949. Celebratory customs include the release of hundreds of green turtles into the ocean from Bali’s Kuta Beach, and panjat pinang, a game in which a pole is set up, covered with oily clay(粘土) and hung with bicycles, televisions and other prizes. Whoever climbs all the way to the top wins, though people often work together to split the prize.
Whimsical skies in Colombia
After protesters took a Bogota’s streets on July 20th, 1810,the Spanish governor acknowledged a limited independence that eventually gave way to full sovereignty(*) in 1819. Colorful hot air balloon shows have previously been in honor of Colombia’s quest for freedom, and folk dancing, flag raising ceremonies and traditional food such as corn cakes are also staples(主要內容) of the day.
